- Research not only the manufacture, but also the factory authorized representative that sells the inspection camera system. Be sure the representative has a web site that you can visit to view and download information about them and the inspection camera. An added bonus is the representatives company has a Duns number, a Cage Code number and they are GSA government certified. This information tells you they are legitimate and have taken the time to let you know they are accountable.
- When purchasing an inspection camera system, make sure you are working with a factory authorized specialist that offers free on site training, not just a manual or CD. A huge bonus is the specialist offers free on site training once a year, not only after the sale, but yearly training for the life of the equipment. This goes along way as your company may have promotions and new employees. Also, make sure the representative is available 24/7 by phone. This is very important at 3am when your technicians need help right away.
- Never purchase an inspection camera system without a free on site demonstration, even if you are considering purchasing from the same manufacture you have purchased from before. There may be upgrades and changes in technology that you are unaware of. Remember, you want the most advanced technology for your technicians. This tells them you care about them and how they perform their job.
- Ask your representative if the inspection camera system has a sonde on the camera head and what frequency does it work off of. Ask if there company also sells the locators that locate the head of the camera. A huge bonus is that the locator that they sell will not only locate the head of the camera but will also line locate (ie, locate all underground utilities). Also, be sure the locator will give you real time depth, how accurate it is (ie, plus or minus 5% is very good) and that they can also train you on the locator.
- Make sure the inspection camera you are purchasing has a portable command module, a huge bonus is it can be connected to the reel. On the command module make sure it can record video and capture still pictures with a single keypress on the keyboard.
- Ask your representative if the command module has digital video, can pan and zoom to focus in on problem areas. Ask if you can rotate images to make them easier to interpret. Make sure the video is recorded onto durable compact flash cards for easy downloads onto a PC or Laptop. An added bonus is blue tooth wireless technology.
- Make sure the command module enables you to compile a comprehensive report on site that incorporates your company logo and includes still pictures, observations and customer details. Make sure it has software to be able to do all the above.
- When purchasing an inspection camera, an open reel is recommended. The open reel is easier to clean up with a power hose. Make sure the camera head is self leveling and is color. An added bonus is to be able to use the same reel for large camera heads and also mini camera heads (we do not recommend having to take the camera head off by a key, screw on camera heads are recommended). Also we recommend brush skids, they are so much easier to push rods.
- Ask about inspection camera system repairs. find out how long it takes for a repair turnaround and whether the representatives company is a factory authorized repair facility for the camera system and locators they sell. Ask if they will give you a free loaner to use while there system is in for repair. A huge bonus is there representative will pick up and deliver the camera system after the system is repaired.
- In today's economy cost is certainly a concern, but make sure you get what you deserve, training, service and support.
